Mamma Pigs Winter Paddock

posted on

April 23, 2024

Our herd of mamma pigs (sows) form the foundation of our entire pork operation.  As you can see, they do not live in a barn.  This winter area is specifically selected because it sets at a high point.  Winter snow melts and cold spring rains flow AWAY from their area.  To make it even better, we have been adding wood chips for years.  They are on top of about three feet of wood chips that are actively composting from the bottom up. In other words, making new soil every year!  This means we are building soil AND having baby pigs at the same time!

Have a look inside our brooder barn where our chicks begin their life, then see the transformation of our pasture shelters. It's spring, and it's time for CHICKENS!
